“The goal was to achieve a balance between the various environments, combine and contrast the highly valuable old section with the new areas containing more modern materials and furniture, and above all, contemporary lighting.”

This was an urban intervention project on the highest section of the historic centre of the town of San Mateo comprising the rehabilitation of several adjoining houses in an advanced state of ruin. With the support, enthusiasm and resources of the owners, we undertook a re-definition of indoor spaces to achieve a complex programme for living space and exhibition space for the owner’s antique collection.

The new dimensions of the house and its layout on three floors plus attic space encouraged us to arrange a transit system using two staircases, one made of iron sheet that creates a dialogue with the old stone walls and enhances their value.

Interestingly, the initial “weekend house” programme became more like a “family hotel” programme, since generous communal spaces were available, both double and triple height, contrasting with the more private chambers and spaces for family members: parents’ suite with dressing room and bathroom, guest rooms, children’s apartments with private bathroom, living rooms, work area, TV area, large dining room, double-height lobby under the main arcade, and a cascade of stepped terraces in the back patio of the house connected to the kitchen, where a swimming pool and a large contiguous green area were built.
