Sant Joan de Deu Hospital

Sant Joan de Deu Hospital

This hospital complex consists of three wards for acute patients, an emergencyroom, pharmacy, archives, admissions centre and day hospital. The project is housed in a multi-organisational, dynamic building that is designed to provide the highestquality working environment and the best levels of care to patients and their families, with every necessary comfort and high-quality materials used both inside and out.It makes the most of the natural light, positioning and orientating each of the spaces – bedrooms, ramps, staircases, circulatory zones, living rooms and so on, to maximum advantage. The emphasis on the interconnection between outside and inside leads the courtyard-cloister-garden space to become a fundamental area of use by the patients. The project uses warm materials and textures, far from the cold image of traditional hospitals, and in line with the ideas, experiences and aspirations that the institute endeavours to confer upon its psychiatric activity, pioneering the transformation of traditional support structures. Amber stone is used both in the outside and interior coatings as well as in the lobby and entrance floor, and wood is used for the interior panelling and coatings of the opaque prismatic shape that houses the public stairs and lifts, becoming a reference point of the building in its urban setting. Glass is used for the large glass panels as well as in the circulation areas, hall, waiting rooms and ramps that connect the different levels that descend to the central courtyard.2000, Prizewinner architecture competition organised by the Sant Joan de Deu Institution for Mental Health Services.
