IVVSA 2003 Competition
An open competition organised by the Valencian Housing Institute (IVVSA) in 2003 to design a social housing project incorporating a high-rise building and terraced family homes. The building styles and methods conform to the zoning parameters for the master planned area positioning a tower block of ground plus 12 floors on plot T2 and houses on the rest, situated on plot U3.The project develops the ideas of Mies van der Rohe’s courtyard houses of the 30s Bauhaus style, and even those ofhis later American phase at M.I.T., in the Chicago school style, which he repeatedly set as an exercise for his students. These courtyard houses (and their more refined three-courtyard version) were Mies’ alternative to detachedhouses, and are based on a conceptual approach to the idea of space and city. This residential style, so Mediterranean in character yet so rarely built, provides a balance to the whole U3 plot, creating a powerful layout which links open and built spaces, forming a rich compositional tapestry. The courtyard houses will be accessed via three semi-pedestrian walkways, thus also creating a generous public space that links the tower with the houses.2003, Mention, IVVSA architecture competitionSee more
